Apply to become a member of the NC Statewide Independent Living Council

Currently Accepting Applications

The North Carolina Statewide Independent Living Council is actively seeking new council members. We invite interested North Carolinians to apply to the Council. Previous board experience is not required. The Council seeks to maintain a representation of individuals from all disability groups with diverse backgrounds and from all over the state.

Who should apply:

  • People who care about working on independent living issues that impact people with disabilities in NC.
  • Have the ability to attend required meetings. This will include one monthly committee meeting and a quarterly full-day Council meeting.

The Council is federally mandated by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (as amended by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014) to monitor, review, and evaluate independent living services provided through the State Plan for Independent Living (SPIL). The SPIL is developed jointly with the NC Centers for Independent Living.

If you or someone you know would like to apply for nomination to the Council, please complete the SILC Membership Interest Application Form. Upon appointment by the Governor, NC SILC Council members serve a 3 year term and are required to attend a full day meeting per calendar quarter and participate in a monthly committee meeting. Council members can attend meetings virtually or in person when applicable. Apply only if you are willing to fulfill the responsibilities.

Please feel free to duplicate the form and share it with as many individuals as you wish. If you need any assistance or have questions about the application, please email gloria.garton@nc-silc.org or call 984-480-6328.
